Simple checks to try when your email stops sending or receiving.
If your email suddenly stops sending or receiving, it doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with the mail server. There are a few simple things worth checking first.
Make sure you can access websites normally. If your internet connection isn't working, your email won't be able to connect either.
It sounds simple, but restarting your Mac, PC, iPhone or iPad can resolve a surprising number of temporary email and network problems.
If several devices are having connection problems, restarting your modem or router can also help.
Turn the modem/router off, wait around 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Allow it time to fully restart and reconnect to the internet before testing your email again.
This will often only take a few minutes, but some modems and internet connections can take up to 10-15 minutes to fully reconnect, so don't be concerned if your internet doesn't come back immediately.
Once your internet connection is working again, try your email and see if the problem has been resolved.
If your internet connection is working, open your web browser and go to:
Log in using your full email address and email password.
If you can log in to Webmail and see your email, that's a good indication that your email account and the mail server are working correctly. The problem may instead be local to your computer, device, email application or internet connection.
You can also try sending yourself a test message from Webmail.
If your email is configured on more than one device, check whether it works elsewhere.
For example, if email works correctly on your iPhone but not your Mac, that's another good indication that the problem is specific to the Mac or its email settings rather than the email account itself.
If you've tried the checks above and your email still isn't working, please get in touch. Let me know what device you're using, what email program you're using and, if possible, include the exact error message you're seeing.
If your usual email isn't working, you can use the HostingServicesWA contact form and enter another email address that you can currently access.
