GETTING STARTED

A simple guide to getting online

Whether you're still deciding what you need or your new account has just been created, these are the main things to know.

1

Choosing the right hosting plan

Not sure how much space you need or where to start? For many customers, 5GB–10GB is a good starting point, particularly if you'll be using your hosting account for email. Attachments, photos and documents can gradually use more space than you might expect, so having a little room to grow can help prevent your mailbox filling up too quickly.

A little regular housekeeping can also make a big difference. Older emails you want to keep can be moved from the mail server and stored locally on your computer — for example, under On My Mac in Apple Mail or a local folder in Microsoft Outlook. This lets you keep important older messages while freeing up server space.

If you're mainly using email now but may add a website later, 5GB or 10GB can provide a good starting point for both. You're not locked into a contract and can upgrade or downgrade your hosting plan if your needs change. If you're unsure, just email us and we'll be happy to advise you.

Your domain name

Your domain name is the address people use to find your website and email you, such as yourbusiness.com.au. If HostingServicesWA is registering your domain, we'll take care of the initial setup. If your domain is registered elsewhere, it can be pointed to your HostingServicesWA hosting account while remaining with your existing provider.

Alternatively, we can also help transfer your domain name to HostingServicesWA, so your domain and hosting can all be managed in one place. If you're not sure which option is best, just get in touch and we'll be happy to help.

3

Keep your Welcome Email handy

Once your account is set up, you'll receive a Welcome Email containing the important information for your hosting account. This includes your domain details, cPanel login, email settings and other information specific to your account.

Keep it safe. Your Welcome Email contains passwords and other private account information. Don't forward it to anyone who doesn't require access to your hosting account.
4

Set up your email and website

If you're using email with your domain, you can set it up on your computer, phone or tablet. Your incoming and outgoing mail server is mail.yourdomain.extension, with your full email address and password used for authentication.

If you already have a website, it can be uploaded using cPanel's File Manager or FTP/SFTP. Website files are stored in the public_html folder. A web designer can also use the relevant details from your Welcome Email if they are managing the site for you.

Manage your account with cPanel

cPanel is the online control panel for your hosting account. It lets you manage email accounts, website files, passwords and other hosting features. You don't need to learn everything in cPanel — most customers only use a handful of its features.
